Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti National Park is East Africa’s premier wildlife destination, comprising nearly 15,000 square kilometers of sprawling wilderness. The park is best known as the home to the annual Great Migration of more than two million wildebeest and zebra, which draws visitors from across the globe to witness one of nature’s last truly awe-inspiring spectacles. Tarangire National Park
Imagine a mysterious woodland where countless elephants glide like silent ghosts between the towering trunks of larger-than-life baobab trees. You’ve just uncovered the best-kept secret of Tanzania’s Northern Circuit: Tarangire National Park. The park’s boundaries officially contain 2,600 square kilometers of wilderness, but the entire Tarangire ecosystem comprises approximately 20,000 square kilometers. This incredible expanse is rightfully celebrated as the home of Tanzania’s largest elephant population. There are several distinct elephant groups which migrate in and out of the park throughout the year, taking advantage of the huge land area available to them. Because of this incredibly high concentration of elephants, visitors to Tarangire are virtually guaranteed to find a new family of these enchanting animals around every corner in the road.
Ngorongoro Crater
Ngorongoro Crater is unique even amongst Tanzania’s incredible array of wild spaces. This enormous caldera is all that remains of an extinct volcano, dating back approximately two million years and comprising no fewer than 260 square kilometers of jaw-dropping wilderness. The walls of Ngorongoro Crater rise higher than 600 meters, and they enclose a surprising variety of landscapes where many of East Africa’s most notable wildlife species roam free. You’ll find rolling savanna where the rare black rhinoceros can still be found beside great herds of plains game, green swamps where hippos dwell, and lakeside forests where countless birds and monkeys weave their way through the canopy. Lake Manyara National Park
Across the stunning landscape of Africa’s Great Rift Valley lies one of Tanzania’s most celebrated safari destinations. This is Lake Manyara National Park: a dream come true for enthusiastic safari aficionados and one of the premier attractions on Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit. The park was formally established in 1960 and now stretches across 325 square kilometers of scenic lakeside wilderness. The star of the show is Lake Manyara itself, a vast alkaline lake which encompasses approximately 230 square kilometers—but never exceeds three meters in depth. The waters of the lake expand in periods of heavy rain from March to May and November to December, but they retreat during Tanzania’s corresponding dry seasons.
Arusha National Park
Just a short drive from both the city center of Arusha and the Kilimanjaro International Airport lies one of Tanzania’s most scenic and rewarding wildlife reserves: Arusha National Park.
